Happy Eaters food fun fitness

OMG, this deeply disturbed me. I'm having trouble getting my brain around it. They're growing beef muscle in a laboratory with the intent of making a no-kill hamburger. I especially covered my mouth and my eyes got great big at, "These strips will be mixed with blood and artificially grown fat to produce a hamburger by the autumn."

Aaaaaaagh!!! That is so creepy! Is it better than hurting a cow? Is it the downfall of humanity? Is it the end of feedlots and cattle ranching? I don't know. I'm still freaking out.

if it does work it would be a great solution to the moral issues for vegetarians. Maybe because I read of a lot of sci-fi, and am used to casual references to "Vat grown beef filet" I don't find the concept repellent.  I am concerned about the taste though, and also whether something engineered can begin to have the nutrients of real food.  it seems like a lot of work to reproduce something that already exists

I saw this on an episode of "Better Off Ted" a few years ago!  "Veridian Dynamics:  We make meat, and meat-like products"...

Wasn't that a Torchwood episode several years ago? (alien worm creature being harvested for its meat....)

Where do they get the blood from? They can't grow blood, I don't think. I guess they could have cows to donate like people do.

Oy. I guess it would help with the vegetarian moral issue, yes, but I highly doubt anything manufactured in a lab could provide the same quality nutrients as  meat from an animal. The test tube actually grosses me out much more than the thought of "eating dead flesh."

Someone posted a story a while back about a woman who was vegan for moral reasons and then discovered that her body was deteriorating severely without animal nutrients. I guess this might have solved her problem, and I'm all for less miserable conditions in massive animal farms, but... I dunno, it's one more way that society is becoming artificial and removed from nature, and as a rural kind of girl that strikes me as a negative thing lol.
