There is SO much truth to this! I think one thing that helped me lose a fuckton of weight my freshman year was the fact I was chained to a (quite healthy) cafeteria. My options were chicken, salad, "ethnic food of the week," pizza, burritos, and sandwiches. I stuck to the chicken (amazing rotisserie stuff), steamed veggies, salad, and when I got bored I had a burrito bol or tried the ethnic pick. We had crepes some days too. All in all though my typical foods were chicken, salad veggies, broccoli or bok choy, eggs, apples, oranges, oats, almond butter, and cottage cheese. I also stowed a few things in my mini fridge like Kashi cereal and English muffins. I loved knowing I had options but more or less just got the same thing every day.
When I transferred, I didn't get a meal plan because I had an apartment (and my new uni's cafeterias aren't a third as good). I got into the weirdest habit of never wanting to eat the exact same thing twice (aside from stuff like scrambles and oats and whatnot). It was stressful! Nowadays I pick a recipe or two (I like to cook) but I make enough so that it lasts most of the week. Easy peasy and i get my creative boost. When I'm not eating my "special recipe food," it's a rotation of salad, scrambles, stir frys, and Greek yogurt. Veggies and fruits change but the base stays the same.
