I forgot to mention that Embrace suddenly started working in YouTube. My plan is to watch it (or at least most of it) while my kids are down for quiet time this afternoon. I'm excited. I have a feeling it's going to make me cry....
I finally got a chance to watch Embrace! I watched the first 45min yesterday and the last (approx) 45 min today.
As I predicted, it made me cry - quite a few times actually. I got emotional when she talked about how her inspiration for change and accepting her body was her daughter. It really touched me because I have a daughter as well. I'm terrified of her having the same body image issues that I have. I also got emotional at various other points when Taryn or the people she was interviewing talked about going through the process of loving their bodies.
The scene that blew my mind the most in the first 45 min was when Taryn went to the plastic surgeon for his opinion of her body. I was blown away by the way he totally ripped her body apart and talked about how he could change it to fit the current social body ideal. It blew my mind. He was talked about completely changing her shape! Then the whole part about girls coming in for plastic surgery on the vaginas. Oh my god. So sad. The whole plastic surgery industry is so so sad.
I also love the part where she said our bodies are not ornaments, they are vehicles.
The second part of the documentary also elicited some tears. All self love of the woman with PCOS who grew out her beard, and the commentary of the normal weight model with regards to the "plus size" label on normal size women... it was all just so good. Then to follow that up with quotes of women of various shapes and sizes who didn't have negative things to say about their bodies (the women who did the body diversity shoot with Taryn). Oh and the burn victim and the women who lost their breasts to cancer.
The movie really made me think.
I wish I would have bought it instead of renting it so I could watch it again and again.
I just found out about this documentary on FB and immediately bought it after watching the trailer. I can't wait to watch it. Contemplated watching parts of it during my lunch break but I probably just tear up.
